I recently stopped in the middle of nowhere (aka Oklahoma) for gas and it was a Sinclair. Only 87, nothing else not even E15-20 whatever. Myself and 4 other drivers went straight through and turned around and got back on the freeway. Made me think how many manufacturers these days recommend or require 91. That gas station won’t be in business for long at this rate.

For E-100, please see clerk and be prepared to show ID if you appear below 40 years old.

This is freaking confusing and can’t be cheap on the logistics side. I often wonder if the entire country could just switch to 91 octane and call it done. Works in every car.

I feel like I read something about the manufacturers trying to get 91 as the base octane rating.

What’s the point of that? If it is only for flex fuel vehicles just offer E85.
Also, I wish ethanol free gas was that cheap in south Florida. Usually over $1 more than E10.

If we standardize, it would inevitably get cheaper. Maybe not quite as cheap as 87 right now, but I bet it would be close. Pumps would be simpler, regulation easier, monitoring/gauging more cost effective, too.

I suspect stations like this just don’t care. There are enough beige sedans, SUVs, and crossovers streaming through to keep them plenty busy. The high performance cars and and motorcycles that pass by are of little consequence.
Rising gas prices won’t help this trend. The first time gas spiked over $4/gal around here, a huge number of small stations ripped out their premium pumps and never looked back.

Manufacturers are pushing more and more for higher octane in the name of fuel efficiency. I see news about it more frequently. Sure, it might take longer than expected due to rising gas prices and people keeping their used cars longer than ever but it’s coming. I think they might just stop 87 and make 91 the minimum and design and tune vehicles for that if they had their way.

Do they still have other octane available?

There were 39.2 million used vehicle sales in 2017. It will be a long time before the majority of the fleet switches to something other than 87.

There’s a buyer for every price point. Also, probably so they can get away with selling ethanol free, maybe some kind of contract.

Speaking of gas. Do Americans have “Purple Gas”? I think it is only an albertan thing but am not sure. We literally dye the gas purple.

They definitely have it in the Maritimes, I think in the US they generally just dye home heating fuel and off road diesel since gas taxes are lower and diesel taxes are much higher. I’ve seen dyed pumps in rural locations, definitely for diesel, but I don’t think I’ve seen dyed gas at a station in the US.

ah, neat. I remember only seeing Purple gas once at a station in a small time in Alberta.

I had one of those in Kansas...but I was out of options and had to use it. The Fiat is recommended 91 but 87 min so I put 3-4 gallons in to get to a real city. :(
